Why I Work Here

AllisonBI love what I do – and I LOVE where I work.

I’ve worked as a stylist elsewhere, both in Florida and other areas of the country—and it wasn’t that long ago that I was just starting out. But even with just three years behind me, I can tell that working at Fusion is different from working at most salons.

I felt it when I interviewed.

They brought me in for an interview, and not only did I talk to a lot of team members who obviously all liked each other, I could tell they clearly cared deeply about the place, because they asked me a million questions, like they were protecting what they’d worked hard to build. I was surprised, then really inspired, as I realized this was something I’d been missing, something I craved. I wanted to be a part of a team that cared about hair and taking care of people as much as I do. I wanted to care that much about the work I do and where I work.

And now I do.

Fast-forward 5 months. I’m still new here, but these are the perks of working here so far:

Unlimited, paid advanced education.

Education is ingrained in the culture of Fusion. We are constantly offered educational opportunities that are not only amazing, they’re FREE. It’s typical to have at least 4-5 classes a month available, classes like Balayage and Aveda Men’s Cuts. My favorites are the classes in our Pensacola Beach Classroom – they’re intimate and the classroom setting is helpful for providing focus.

Our master stylists and directors are teaching us, so I feel comfortable (there’s no intimidation factor, which is nice). Plus I feel like if they can do it, I can do it – I can see myself up there teaching one day. With Fusion, they’re big enough that it’s an actual career path and a goal I can work toward.

What I can learn is unlimited, and I can go to whatever classes I want. Who doesn’t want to keep learning?


It’s hard to explain if you’re not in it, but there’s not a day that goes by I don’t feel like someone is there specifically to help me. The leaders check in, the stylist next to me waves me over to see a new technique, even the guests are so NICE. I feel like there’s this understood belief that if you’re here, you’re here to help – each other and the guests.

My schedule rocks.

We’re open 7 days a week, which means there are MORE shifts available and a more flexible schedule is possible. I really like that my schedule is set – it doesn’t change week to week. I can plan around my 2 days off in a row being the same, every week. I also really like that my shift times vary. On Fridays, for example, I get in early but leave at 1:00 (it’s like I still have a whole day for myself after work). And some days I have my mornings for myself, and work from 2 till 8 pm. It feels like I get to fit in a lot of “life” around my time at work.

Hello, $10 services.

Twice a month, we can get whatever services we want for $10 a piece – hair, spa, you name it. A $10, Aveda 90-minute massage or facial? Yes, seriously. We take care of each other with tips, but how else would I experience such a variety of services so often? It’s really nice to get to experience all the services our guests do, and it makes me proud of the high quality work we do here.

Above and beyond benefits.

Fusion exteriorThere are other benefits here most salons don’t offer, like health insurance and paid vacation. Every vacation request I’ve made so far has been honored. And this might not sound like a big deal to most people in 9 to 5 positions, but if you work in the salon industry you know it’s not the norm be paid via direct deposit, which we have here. It’s so nice not to have to go to the bank every week to deposit a paycheck. The convenience and dependability of that means a lot to me.

I love the location.

One last thing I can’t overlook is the location. I work in the Sandestin location, which is in an upscale shopping center full of restaurants and shops – there’s even a gym nearby. It’s nice to have so many convenient, upscale businesses around, plus they attract a great clientele I can build by business around.

I see myself here for a long time, as an established stylist with a full book of long-term guests. I know I want to keep growing, and I know my growth will be supported here.
